COLES
UI / UX / PRODUCT DESIGN
CONTEXT
My second time working for Coles saw me reporting directly to their phenomenal Head of Design, Nathan Streater. I worked extensively on the development of Coles Pay (formerly Fly Pay wallet), the migration of CFS Credit Cards platform from Citibank to NAB, its Insurance products from IAG to A&G, as well executing project based work on front & back end systems.
A snapshot of day to day life in the role is as follows:
• Delivery focussed end to end product design in an agile environment
• Working across App, Web, and Retail Checkout / PoS touch points on the front end
• Developed extensive knowledge of and collaborated daily with teams specialising in back end systems
• Highly collaborative role on projects that were a priority for Coles leadership
• Strengthened my reputation as someone who gets things done well in chaotic environments
• Worked directly alongside engineers, designers and leadership from Australian Payments Plus on a daily basis
• Balancing of both APP and Coles meetings / ceremonies
• Coordination of workflow both on the Coles and APP side
• Stakeholder management
• Navigation of complex external regulatory and internal political environments
• Working directly with developers to ensure technical accuracy
• Prototyping
• High fidelity UI / UX design
• Facilitating workshops
• Travel to Melbourne on multiple occasions to workshop strategy for the Coles Pay product with Coles Senior Leadership
• Conducting competitor analysis and research
• Designing to modern accessibility standards
• Synthesising user feedback and integrating learnings into design
• Completed all outstanding work to a high standard, often in tight turnarounds, enabling the teams to ship multiple features as well as the rebrand of Fly Pay to Coles Pay.
OUTCOME
The joke I was making by the end of my second contract was that I was rapidly becoming Nathan's personal 'fixer'. What I meant by that was I found myself consistently being deployed into projects that required delivery focused results, and a willingness to press forward amid highly ambiguous, fluid or dynamic conditions.
I thoroughly enjoyed my second deployment amongst the team, it was incredibly interesting watching the myriad ways in which the organisation had improved, changed and grown over the course of 3 years.
I know under Nathan's stewardship the team will go from strength to strength, and if the opportunity arises to assist in future, I'll always be willing to drop in at short notice and assist.
